Investa Property Group became the first major real estate investment institution to publishing building environmental performance data in a dynamic, interactive format through its 2009 Sustainability Report. That report presented seven years of detailed data collected on everything from energy consumption and water use through to recycling and tenant complaints. Remarkably, the visualisation tool was designed to put the power of analysis in the users', rather than the publisher's, hands.
Data visualisation has the potential to transform the way people engage with buildings because it creates transparency. Recognising this potential, for the past six months the Investa Sustainability Institute has been working with leading interaction designers and web developers to create a portal for visualising building performance data. Visitors will be able to submit building performance data and analyse data submitted by others. We expect this new initiative to become a major focus for the Institute throughout 2010 and 2011.
Will online visibility change the way buildings are managed? We hope so!
Stay tuned throughout July for the launch of this exciting new initiative. Or, better still, sign up for ISI news and you'll be one of the first to hear about it.
